Memorial Day? it was once a day I didn?t take to heart. While growing up I was just another kid enjoying the day off of school. I never really had anyone explain to me the reason for this day, until I was plunged straight into the meaning up close. America has always been known to possess one of the greatest military units in the world. Many tend to argue this point, but no matter how you look at it, the United States have definitely gone over some leaps and bounds when it comes to its military. For years, we have answered the call to combat with a steady fist, never showing weakness or falter. They call us a sleeping giant, and probably for a good cause.
In September of 2001 we were attacked on our own soil. Everyone remembers that day like it was just some horrible dream. However truth is truth, and it opened our eyes to the very real danger that exists in this world. This act of terror plunged us into a global war on terrorism, which for the past 6 years has been the main focus point of the media. For our family is still out there, thousands of miles away fighting for our continuous freedom that many of us take for granted daily.
Today is a day we all should sit down and reflect on our country. I?m asking for everyone to take a few moments of silence and remember, remember those who have paid the ultimate price for freedom. They throw themselves into harm?s way so we don?t have to. They do the job that no body else wants, and in doing so, find themselves to be way beyond their comfort zone. Their daily routine is sliced and transformed in order to adapt to an ever-changing routine. War is not fun. No body likes to be at war, but that doesn?t take the fact away that today, America is at war. Although unpopular, the war is still taking place, and the armed forces are doing their best to end it.
In the past year alone, we have lost 7 service members from within my unit. Seven is not a very large number? but it was when you live and work with these people on a daily basis. They become your friends, and your family. They are the ones you see and talk to about close and personal things; they aren?t just some guy walking across the street. We miss them every day, and wish that there was some way to bring them back, yet we honor them today and everyday for the price they paid on our behalf.
Since the Iraq war started in 2003, we have lost over 3,500 Soldiers, Seaman, Airmen, Coast Guard, and Marines. Remember them; remember each and every one of them for what they have done. They fought a courageous fight, and gave everything they had for us. They don?t even know us, yet they were prepared to give their lives for us to live with our daily luxuries. Pray for their families, pray that they have the strength to continue on, and know that their loved ones made a difference in the world. While we sit here on our couches watching TV, our armed forces are out there with live rounds blazing by their heads. Every day is a battle, no matter how large or small it may be for them. So pray for them, and honor the lost.
This day comes but once a year, however I?m asking that every chance you get to take a moment of silence in remembrance. For those who have died were more to us than just a statistic on the news. They were more than just another victim of terror. They were our families, they were our friends? and most importantly, they are our Heroes.
