Like most people said, "getting high" shouldn't be the highlight of your book. If you have some sort of internal issue of some kind to deal with, then it could become readable.

If you tend to elaborate as the writing goes on, it might work. I mean, Trainspotting began essentially as a group full of friends in the slums, and Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas was pretty much a gigantic drug trip ...

Just make sure it's somewhat original and interesting not just to stoners. =P Both of the books above absolutely fascinated me.

Sounds like a winner to me.

If it's you expressing your deepest fears/ambitions/thoughts, etc. through your characters, then it would be great. If it's a story driven by the concept of stoners talking while high, then it wouldn't really be that good.

"The Cirlce" would serve more as a ritual to relieve stress. Stress that I would detail in the story; each character's stress differing from the other's.

Good movie. Bad book. Not to mention the fact I doubt most parents would let their adolescent children purchase it or purchase it for them (which, if it seems to be a book about 'the problems of youth' would be a good portion of sales), so there goes like....half of the teenage demographic.

Books require plots. You have no plot. You've simply selected one aspect of life out of many, thrust it in our faces, and said, "There'll be more to it, and everything that I haven't detailed (yet will still miraculously appear) will obviously be first-rate. With this in mind, will this be good?"

No. Writing books takes a lot more planning than that.

Exactly, Gokua. Romanticism is your key to making a good book plot. Never mind the fact that it was too unstable to survive in light of real-life tragedies, leaving both it and its successor (Victorianism) to die out in light of the War.

....not the group I know. The group that smokes pot is, the majority of the time, pot heads. And pot heads aren't much for having money, or reading books. I mean, if Clerks had been a book, I don't think they would have even turned a profit.

Books require plots, that's true, but 'books require planning' is a total myth. His Dark Materials was written with no middle or end in mind - just a beginning. Some authors like to plan things out from start to finish, others like to do it completely spontaneously. Most are somewhere in the middle, with a vague outline that gets elaborated as they go off on it.

Ha, I knew you'd find some example to prove me wrong. You can't resist. I love it.

Books do require planning. It's a simple fact. Even if Philip Pullman drew up drafts of His Dark Materials without figuring an end, he was still experienced enough to recognize the vague "dark area" that would indicate possible ends, and engineered his writing in a way so as to create as few as possible inconsistencies. Then, once the draft was completed, his revision process was necessarily more stringent so as to smooth out the plot.

This is writing. There are exceptions. You know this, I know this. But there are fundamentals. You don't break from this fundamentals unless you have a very good reason. Gokua has no good reason.

Whoever said that writing is a free art deserves to be made a claustrophobic, and locked up in an elevator for a year.

From every Stephen King book I've read, there's been a plot. Even Napoleon Dynamite has a plot. Just because it's "simple" doesn't mean it's bad, or nonexistent.

Stephen King is a true master of literature.
