Historical Fiction vs. Science Fiction

Personally, I'm in a craze for both right now; I'm dying to play the new Star Wars game, I am totally looking towards the high tech future, etc., but then also, I find myself fascinated with history and games like The Godfather and Assassin's Creed. I'm thinking about doing either a television series or a novel, and I'd just like to know; out of these two genres, which would you most enjoy, and specifically for historical fiction, what time period?

Also, which genre do you just generally find yourself reading/watching/playing/etc. more?

I watch . . . Comedy, Horror, Action, and anything movies on wars--WW1, WW2, Vietnam.

I read . . . Stephen King, usually. That would basically count as fantasy, science fiction, or horror.

I always loved the time of the samurai. I dont know what time period that was but it was interesting.

I also enjoy the science fiction genre, such as Coboy Bebop.(Best show ever IMO)

Its what ever you decide, because thats the glory of writing a book. Using your imagination!!

I can't haul myself away from historical fics, but that's not to say I don't enjoy sci-fi pieces. I just find myself adequate with that hoary scribble, it has this tightening grasp on me that I can't escape.

I'm still really excited about this Star Wars next-gen though, and Assassin's Creed equally.

I'm conflicted with things like this, because I tend to prefer the creativeness of Sci-Fi and the openness to new things, and yet swords are far better than guns.

Fantasy is the way to go.

Just for the record: I didn't know that there was a such thing as historical fiction. Sounds like an oxymoron to me.

I think he's referring to the alt. history novels, like the Harry Turtledove novels where WWII Germany, Russia, and US combine forces to fight aliens. <.<

Historical fiction is just a story that's focused on a certain time period. Like "The Killer Angels".

I enjoy historical fiction more, just because it's realistic.

Like Dragonlance, Lord of the Rings, Eragon, and the like.

I like to watch Star Wars though..

NEATER. 'Better' implies you stand a better chance with a sword than you do with a gun. Which is retarded. Modern ranged weaponry > anything else. I know I've said something like this before, but it bears repeating.

When I say historical fiction, I mean that I would narrate a series of historical events through the eyes of several fictional characters.

For example, Johnny B. Good is a German soldier in WWII. I write about what happens to him, noting and including major historical events in the process, as if he was there.
