Writing Example
Dr. Gero’s lab sat quiet and black save for the humming of numerous electric devices and machines. Set deep under the earth’s crust above the laboratory was the lifeless tomb and prison for so many of the brilliant and deranged doctor’s experiments and creations. However not all tombs stay closed and not all prisoners remain forever imprisoned.
Loud shrills shot through the long abandoned complex as the lights began to glow and than finally shine bright with the unnatural white artificial light. The computer screen attached to one of the stasis pods flashed and read constantly changing and alarming data. “Stasis system failure, emergency hard drive reboot, initializing neural network” flashed on the screen over and over while streams of high pressure air and coolant hissed from the unsealing stasis chamber. All the while no human read the alerts, nor heard the alarms as they screeched throughout the complex, however some ears did hear them and rushed to head those warning bells.
Several of Gero’s lesser creations rushed into the holding room for the several stasis pods. Looking like little more than metallic colored mannequins the maintenance androids filed into the room from their many respective routes of daily upkeep and repair until all six had entered the room. Two of the rather mundane droids rushed over to the stasis pod as more and more lights flittered into life on the pod and with their emotionless faces tried to gauge the exact situation and possible solutions. While the two androids worked over and read the information on the small screen attached to the pod, three of the other androids moved to the main work station located in the center of the large room while the last remained at the only door into or out of the room.
“Reactivation already commencing, emergency shutdown required.” The unemotional mechanical voice of one of the androids located near the stasis pod said to the group located at the main control panel.
“Emergency shutdown has 90% chance of destroying neural network of subject 14 if initiated at this time.” One of the androids replied in the exact same tone and pitch as the previous as code after code was entered into the main control panel.
“Acceptable, initiate.” The android located back at the pod replied.
However, the prospect was entirely unacceptable to some. In the blink of an eye shards of glass and metal flew outwards into the open space of the room as a bulky muscled grey arm extended through the hole. At the end of the bulging grey arm thick fingers had wrapped themselves around the neck of the maintenance android and were tightening.
“Init. . . .ini. . . .shu. . . .shuuuuuu. . . . .” The android’s voice cracked and faded into its void of power drawl. While none of the maintenance androids were built with any kind of emotion or ability to change their facial features, all stopped for a moment in united curiosity as their heads tilted to take in the scene of their brethren’s head and body being severed from one another. The moment only lasted a heartbeat though as in the next blink the functionless droid was hurled violently through the air into one of the other droids working the main computer station.
Lacking the speed of the previous violence the hulking grey arm retreated back into the pod, only to however be used along with the other to force the door entirely off its hinges and come crashing to the ground. Stepping out of the chamber inside was the large and very imposing image of Android-14. The face locked in seeming perpetual grimace remained looking forward as the rest of the muscular frame stepped out into the openness. Still keeping those dead android eyes locked directly forward Android-14 in a flash whipped his right arm and hand out to grab the skull of the remaining maintenance droid located near him. Without a sound uttered 14 lifted the bot effortlessly into the air and then smashed the metal skull into the hard lab floor; nothing but a few lingering sparks and the sound of slightly uncrumpling metal was left of the droid’s skull as 14 pulled his hand away from the small crater.
“Initiate emergency lockdown. Priority one order.” Came the uniformed voice from one of the two droids still remaining at the control desk. The order was directed to the single android that remained at the door. No quicker than the order had been given though a thin beam of yellow light hissed through the air and seared a hole through the android and sent the mechanical body falling limp to the ground. 14 lowered his index and middle finger back down with the rest of his arm and took three giant steps towards the two remaining droids.
“Initiating backup emergency protocols, initiate base wide failsafe.” One of the two remaining bots spoke out in its uni-toned voice. The commanding android was able to all but finish his command inputs before the massive fingers found their way around his entire skull and the sound of crushing metal and frying circuitry signaled the end of the bot’s existence. The final remaining maintenance droid was able to do little more than look with expressionless eyes as the hulking Android-14 drove a powerful grey fist and arm through the main section of its body and powered it down permanently.
The dead android slid off of 14’s arm as he lowered it back down to his side, and with his other hand he punched in the clear button on the main console so that the backup ordered was never sent. He assessed the room for a moment, the awakening of the other androids prevented, he would allow his brothers and sisters to remain asleep until he knew all the details of his current situation, 14 knew though that no matter what a 90% chance of neural network failure had been unacceptable.
Having no other targets to eliminate and no further means to gather information from his current surroundings Android-14 set forth for the exit from this facility and his entrance into the waking day of Earth.
