"The Windows Experience Index measures the capability of your computer's hardware and software configuration and expresses this measurement as a number called a base score. A higher base score generally means that your computer will perform better and faster than a computer with a lower base score, especially when performing more advanced and resource-intensive tasks."

That's from the help tip. It goes on to say more. I don't think its particularly meaningful, but I'm sure there are those who would disagree.

The graphic card craps up the score.

Its just based on your lowest score, so take that for what its worth. My lowest is 4, from my hard drive whatever. Everything else is at least 5, with a couple at 5.9. So... *shrug*

I would have had the user specify what the primary purpose of their computer was, and then provide a weighted average based on the individual scores. There's some merit to the "a chain is only as stronger as its weakest link" school of thought, but it only roughly applies here.

I'm sure there are plenty of people who take that index seriously enough. To each their own.

People seem to think the only benchmark that matters is 3dMark, but I think that's stupid too. =(

I like watching the movie with the marines shooting everything though.

It's a pretty good one though. If you can get 2 frames per second when it renders the big canyon, you have some fast CPU power!
