Ok, so I'm getting a laptop before I go off to school next year. I want it to be a nice one and my grandpa will probably wind up helping me out via birthday money from a few months ago so I can afford a bit. Anyway, I'm pretty computer savvy on my own, just want some ideas from others...just brands and such...don't need the complete layout put out there...oh, and no macs. Nothing personal against them, just that my friend went elitist after getting his (not that he wasn't already...not that he deserved to be...) and I won't give in.

I've used... uh... four different HP laptops for significant periods of time, and haven't had a single complaint about any of them. So, I'd suggest looking at theirs.
After that I'd suggest Toshiba, for similar reasons.

That looks sexy...though a main reason I want a laptop is for portability so I can use it in class...And I'll look into those Rad.

I've got a Sony Vaio, really decent for the price (Mine was on sale around Christmas time). It runs really well, never had any problems. My only complaint is the video card. I can run games but mostly always on the lowest settings (most of the time medium settings, though, but depends on the game). It's got some little plusses like media controls, webcam, microphone, and SD card drive. I'd say it makes a really good media computer.
tl;dr Sony Vaio - good performance, not so good video performance
ps. you pay for the looks, as well. you could easily get a better HP laptop for the same price, but damn my laptop is pink and looks awesome.

Most laptops aren't designed for gaming.

I have an HP laptop and I love it. It is a little heavier then other laptops I've had but I think it is pretty stylish, especially with them moving the logo to the bottom corner instead of plopping it directly in the center like most.
HP usually runs sweet rebates before Christmas and when school starts so check the local papers and you'll get like 300 to 400 dollars off of one pretty soon.
HP all the way.

You can build a Dell for around $1000 that would play most games fine.
And I say build a Dell.

Dell buys really cheap/poor quality hardware that has more failures than pretty much everyone else combined. I'd suggest anything but a Dell.

Yeah, but I already have an iPod...albeit not a touch, but that's just excessive really...
And thanks, I'll look away from dell then.

They give Dell's with certain scholarships at Bama, and damn if not everyone I know with them has had one problem or another.

Macs are only good for faggots, girls, and people trying to do a bunch of multimedia shit.
For school your best bet is probably a PC. Though they usually have more problems, they're more helpful when it comes to school and all.
Also, I suggest HP. They're pretty high-quality.

Good point. HPs, in my experience, have been on the heavier end.
Might not be an issue for you, but still something to note.

I've got an HP, works fine. =) Toshiba's nice too, though. Vista ftw

If weight is an issue I know they have a few ultralight notebooks like the one I got, the 2710p which is light and also a convertible tablet. It weighs about 3 and a half pounds, and isn't the lightest notebook they offer either.
They definitely can weigh a little more in just the standard lines, and they have at least one desktop replacement notebook that weighs up to 16 pounds.
