give me a rundown on bleach manga. i'm thinking about getting into it, but i want to know what it's about before i make that kind of commitment. i know you enjoy mindless entertainment, but ~400 issues is too much of a timesink for me if it's gay

It's total shounen manga, there are some funny parts at the beginning but once you get to around the 250~ mark the series starts to decline into long and boring fights and all the fun pretty much seeps out.

Essentially it's about Death Gods who go around sending dead people to the afterlife and protecting spirits from evil creatures called "Hollows" which are spirits who didn't pass on for whatever reason and have lost all sense of themselves. The main character is a kid named Ichigo who has remarkable spiritual power that allows him to meet spirits but also makes him attractive to Hollows who need spirit power.

One day a Hollow follows him home and Rukia gets injured protecting Ichigo, she passes on her powers to him and he becomes a Shinigami who's considerably more powerful than her and so forth.

Basically stop reading the manga after the Rescue Rukia arc, it turns to shit after that point.

I was afraid of that. See, I started leafing through the dozen most recent chapters at onemanga and the story seemed intriguing, but that's because I don't know who any of the characters are and my imagination fills in a lot of blanks with whatever I want. I hate it when battles drag on in Naruto for more than three or four chapters, even though those fights are pretty interesting in and of themselves, so it would drive me insane if the thirty chapter long conflicts in Bleach are as dumb as you say they are. Guess I'll read the first hundred issues and see how it goes from there. D:
