The words were audible within a dimly lit room reminiscent of a padded cell. On a screen six feet across and four high the characters of the word appeared in succession, green; the color of a summer climate's grass. Beneath the screen was a square indention six inches deep, and six across. A plastic window with a handle sat in place over the opening.
"Greetings. Who I am is not important. Who you are however, is. You are Cain. Say it with me."
The figure within the room frowned at his nudity, brow furrowed. "Cain. . . Where are my clothes?" The figure's earthen colored eyebrows arched.
"Your mind is already beginning to process situation and decency." The voice came in a staunchy monotone.
"Yes." Cain's hands probed his body unconscious of the action, but taking in the feelings. He glanced down, a black trail leading to a curly pubic bush. The legs were as thick as the belly, hair color hard to decipher in the lulling half light.
"How do you desire to appear?" That mocking monotone again.
The android thought for a moment, glancing up from his study. "As the poor artisan." For some reason this idea pleased him.
An electric crackle sounded and the opening below the screen blazed brilliant aquamarine-white. It coalesced to form matter, a similar colored capsule taking shape in the center. The light ceased and it fell with a tinkle to the bottom of the window.
"Your clothes are inside. "
Cain opened the window, an overwhelming sadness washing over him like a spectre passing over. "What is this feeling? Why do I desire deactivation?"
There was a silence and then more words appeared, resounding in the bleak chamber in that dull, lifeless voice. "Your body will be eternally healthy. Conversely your mind will never be completely well. It is psychosis. You will be this way forever. There is no cure. The programming is irreversible. If you perish here you will not cease to be, but begin existing in another plane."
Cain depressed the button atop the pinky sized blue cylinder and tossed it. There was a resounding poof and a wardrobe appeared. He dressed in what would become ritual silence, pulling a white shirt over his head and jeans over his legs. He belt the pants in place, and stretched into a black overcoat, buttoning it across the midsection. The cyborg grimaced, glancing about the room.
"What is this place? Where am I?"
"In a forgotten part of the world." The monotone took on some false emotion. "Where the world is still old."
The lights dimmed and a succession of screens passed by, blurring together in the tawny haired machine's mind. Depicted feats of strength impossible, genius calculations, and events of human life; From murders to heroics, abstinent priests to sex crazed animals, and music from melodic symphonies to drawn out, maddening, rock solos. Cain rolled forward, sitting on his ankles. The show persisted for several hours.
"What do you feel?" The words appeared in vibrant jade across the screen, welcomed as a change. It took the android several seconds to react to the question. His brows scrunched together. A series of dots appeared on the screen in series of threes, glaringly green. The elipsis faded, then reappeared mockingly.
"Overwhelmed." Cain stated finally, glancing off to the left as if to avoid the eyes of the computer.
"Are you compelled to hurt anything?" The tone was studious, like something a principal would say to a student who'd done something wrong. "Yourself?"
"I don't desire it but the thoughts remain."
A scowl formed on Cain's visage as artificial muscles drew taut beneath the skin. Overwhelmed as a word, did little to describe the emotions. There was also sadness. And distracted pain of another nature. Perhaps it was fear. He tried to dismiss the last notion, mouth open in attempted speech.
"You're thinking of Frankenstein's monster," the computer interrupted. Cain's eyes went violently wide, white surrounding murky green like a piece of topaz covered in dirt. Omniscient. Were all things perfect like this; More so than himself? He blinked several times then brought himself to words.
"The monster. Yes."
"But also the man."
"Man made a monster, marred in construction, created without continence; did the damned denizen die? Memory processes damaged. This too is part of the disorder." Everything came out unmetered and jumbled together, rapid; almost manic. He found the words, like the desire to be deactivated, poetic.
"Question and answer reasoning function has begun." The machine paused for a moment, and the elipsis reappeared. Cain felt something probing inside his mind, then something like a prick against his flesh when he fought the force.
"The answer Doctor?" Cain's frown deepened. The computer was a scientist performing experiments. He spoke in it's place, more of a question than a statement. "I am the creation conversed. I will forever live as this. Afraid to hurt, scorned if known, a mutilation of man's mind."
"You are the young Vitruvian creation."
Description: Cain is a cyborg with an image of a young Vitruvian for its cast. He's chronically depressed, immortal, and remotely shy. You'd find him wearing a white shirt beneath a black or brown jacket, reminiscent of a Goodwill adorned youth artist. His eyes are brown with a hint of green.
