Ki Deflection
#1
I could have swore that I saw a thread with this somewhere, but I can't find it or it was a fever dream. So!

What stat is used for the generic "smacking a ki bolt away" action without having to use some special technique? My instinct says strength, but who the hell knows.

Either Strength or Agility, I think.

I've noticed a few characters with absurd strength (100%str Q_Q) and others with high agility. I think it might become important at some time to make a distinction, or is it some combination between the two?

I thought it would be Defense, since that's essentially what that kind of move would do.

I certainly didn't think that Hibiki would be able to do that with his Str score without some sort of tech AND enough Ki to back it up.

I'd advise reconsidering that to make it Defense, though. I mean, doesn't that sort of go into the "one stat subbing for others" thing that we want to avoid?

Yeah. It should be a Tech.
Edit: With a cost similar to flight.

Thinking on it now, I'd actually say Agility makes the most sense.

Endurance is your ability to withstand blows while Agility is your ability to avoid them. Since deflection is actively not withstanding a blow, I wouldn't agree with you, Belle.

Well, you're still getting 'hit' by it, you're just deflecting it. It still would take a cost on you, I think, as opposed to just dodging it completely. But eh. I can see your viewpoint.

I'm very curious, though. When do you think this would be a problem?

Are there plans to start PMing staff saying "I was fighting this other guy and he RPed deflecting five ki blasts when the difference between our stats obviously show he should only be able to deflect three."

I guess I don't see the point in this kind of clarification.

I am totally going to PM you with that exact sentence someday.

I would expect nothing less, Sage.

I'm thinking more of the quality of the ki blast being deflected. Characters with higher stat can deflect bigger attacks with their bare hands.

/shrug @ Kaden

Depends on the person. Like, if Hibiki and Kaden fought, and Kaden did a super ultra mega death beam, and Belle was just like "NNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNGH YEAHYEAHYEAH" and deflected it back at Kaden with his UBER STRENGTH, wouldn't you be a little annoyed?

That question hasn't actually been raised yet. So far it's just been about which stat is factored for the action. I don't know about questioning how much X stat = defection change% as that tends to degenerate into obfuscation with no straight answers. :|

Because it's not meant to be a hard stat system. It's a roleplaying guideline system.

Why do you continue to act like that's not the intent.

Because it's not as soft as advertised. You have to be able to know what the effects are if you're going to write a back-and-forth combat situation properly. I'm still holding true to the belief that 9/10 players chose to have shit defense because they intend to just downplay whatever happens to them, because most of the characters have such low Endurance that they'd fall over in a strong breeze.

Not to sound like a jerk but wouldn't that... be evidence of a soft system? O.o

Not to say that's going to be acceptable. My character, for instance, is a marshmallow. If she was fighting, for example, Rod, he would certainly have the advantage in close-quarters. She can't throw or take a punch very well, given her crappy stats in those categories (the fact his appearance would leave her absolutely terrorized is something I'm going to ignore for the sake of focusing on stats here).

The only advantage she would have - against pretty much anyone, actually - is to use a more ranged approach to combat. If Rod was pinned down and unable to get in close, yeah, Sage would have the advantage. If Rod could overcome the barrage and get in close, Sage is basically hopeless unless she can get away.

I'm sure there are some players that have glass-like characters because that's what they want, but I think most characters that have low endurance are owned by players who want to believe that the system is softer than it really is. In that other stats thread it was brought up that endurance isn't as effective as the numbers would imply (1 endurance does not negate 1 strength/focus) so if endurance is less than 1/3 of a strong attack the result would be nasty. If I'm wrong then tell me where. :O

I don't know how else to explain this.

We are taking what is created to be a pretty paintjob for your car and are somehow turning it into a discussion about how its exact pigment and the thickness of the coating allow it an extreme and perfectly formulaic advantage in regards to engine temperature, aerodynamics, mileage, and the space-time continuum.

When I bought my car, I threw on whatever color paint looked right on it.

At this point, I need to know.

Am I just completely wrong in this viewpoint, and are we honestly allowing people to squeeze extra gas mileage out of their car for choosing blue paint, go faster for choosing red paint, have a better circulation of breeze with the windows down for choosing white paint, and better tire traction for painting flames down the side?

At this point, I just want to make sure that my viewpoint isn't off, in that the four stats give ZERO effective advantage and are there simply as a method of flavor, just to show your fighting style as far as roleplaying is concerned.

EDIT: Just to be clear, I'm not attempting to mock Rod in this post. I'm honestly at the point where I just see such a massive ordeal being made over the viewpoint that there is a secret advantage to be gained if you run into someone with percentages slightly different from yours, which leaves me to question my own understanding of it, given that I've been repeating my stance for many threads and we are still discussing it.

If your viewpoint is off, it's not by much. Analogies ftl.
