Short Bio:
Keno was born as a nothing. Just a zero on the radar. A poor kid on the wrong side of the tracks stuck with a family who worked long and hard to maintain that small house that didn’t compare to the better, richer homes surrounding them. Thrust into an early adulthood, Keno learned the ways of hard work, going with his father to make money so the family could survive through the days. By the age of ten, Keno was a major provider to the Basco family and his mother, two sisters and younger brother were all grateful. Of course his younger brother didn’t work at all, which always rubbed Keno a little raw every time he saw the kid eating the food he worked hard to provide. Damn kid with his Mohawk and bastard attitude about everything. But that’s another story.
Now in Keno’s very limited free time, he found a nice escape from all these problems. Now I know what you’re thinking, alcohol, smoking, and drugs, horrible underage things that make for a nice trauma history. But we don’t swing that way. Keno’s escape was games. Lots of them. We’re talking major addiction here. And he’s grown up with these contraptions since they were fuzzy pixels, to the 8-Bit era up to Hi Def motion capture graphics. From stories as basic as Princesses being captured and ninjas in America finding their father’s killer to demons bringing Hell to Earth and the undead warriors of Gods slaying his objects of worship. And as Keno grew older, jobs became easier and he was gaining more credibility, more responsibility, meaning his pay rate was becoming more than scraping by for his family. With his father only getting older and losing his youthful joy in work, Keno took over as main provider while his father did what he could. This left Keno with nice leftover funds for his addiction and with his job no longer being hard labor and now soft work dealing with customers, he had more time and energy for games.
By eighteen, the boy was convinced games could be repeated. Now most poor folk who know only work with limited education have warped ideas about the world. But none like Keno. And thus the martial arts, weapons and stunt work began. No longer content to mash buttons, Keno now went under the tutelage of martial art movies and kids running from building to building and cartoons with ridiculous fights that were nothing short of unbelievable. Little did he realize he could just look through history books and current events to find that most of his games and movies and cartoons were based off his reality around him.
Yet he trained and honed skills through the wonder of movie and video game magic. Taking methods from all mediums and stringing them in one convoluted, but shockingly efficient madness. Focus the Chakra, let the elements fill you, be one with the shadows, be one with the earth, collect from your enemies to gain their power, use the “Focus” command, eat the mushroom. And through this regiment and any more meta-references he could fit in all of this, Keno found strength focused unlike any human he had known and bursts of energy flowing through him. From a whole childhood of video games and movies, Keno had managed to attain what most people in the world around him spent only a few years to master and more.
This basement nerd was ready to rock, kickin’ ass and leading high scores and now blowing shit up and beating bullies who’d have otherwise made fun of him for his sheltered life. Yet this poor boy on the wrong side of the tracks was destined to meet those bitchy twins, tragedy and trauma. One winter morning, Keno was in the middle of a boss fight and without thinking, paused his game and rushed for work. A loud hum was coming from the basement and it wasn’t the console making the foreshadowing noise, but the large space heater he had left on. From the prancing and play fights of his younger siblings, the coin of fate was flipped in the air as if it were set in aerial motion by a bastard version of justice, a two-faced bastard blind to compassion. With his controller falling from the desk, it toppled through the air as it stretched its cord tight, yanking the system from it’s throne, crashing right on top of the heater. Knocking the behemoth over, it’s own plug snapped from the outlet, landing in the family dog’s drinking bowl and sending a splash of a mix of slobber and water into the TV’s adapter. The spark was enough to travel along the black cord and cause the screen to blank out before bursting in electricity and flames. Flames that lit up his oil-based painted models with their highly flammable glue as they were still fresh and waiting to dry and seal.
It wasn’t long before the entire basement, along with Keno’s lifetime of collections were up in flames along with the house. By the time Keno had made it home the flames had nearly grown to their peak and no fire trucks or ambulances could be seen. Through the countless viewing of space operas, Keno did the appropriate thing by dropping to his knees, leaning back with arms outstretched and letting out a tortured “NO!” Little did he know that just around the corner, the ambulance was loading Keno’s family.
It was from that day that Keno vowed to never let his nerd ways to harm another person, shedding his nerdy shell and leaving the home that he destroyed. And through the few years he walked, Keno failed and failed again at ridding himself of his nerd origins, becoming nothing more than a hybrid of bad ass and pop culture references. A type of edgy otaku if you will. The Journeyman of Nerds. And through these travels and realization of oneself, Keno fell in hard with a gang of kids much like himself, excited to see one bad mother of a nerd who could kick ass in both video games and reality. Someone who talked hard like the roughest space smuggler’s and walked the walk of the witty zombie slayers. And of course Keno taught them to be cool like him, though his method of training as he trained himself didn’t work out so well.
In a short time, though, his crew of kids found a new idol to worship as they joined up with a new gang. Curious, Keno went following to find some blowhard claiming to be more bad ass than the nerd turned hardcore. Out to prove no one was badder than he was, Keno called out this so-called Awesome Extremist and, the two of them did battle, meeting with a draw. Fighting with knives, the two basically went blow for blow, giving each other scar for scar in a pathetic mirroring of a fight. But as with all epic fights, Keno became kinsmen with the man he would come to know as Marko. Their ways of awesome and bad ass constantly is rivaling one another.
Of course a dynamic duo is never good enough and there needs to be a trio for some real good adventures. And so one day as Keno and Marko were picking on defenseless gangs who couldn’t match their powers, the leader of the pack stepped in, demanding to fight the two. It was a little embarrassing getting flicked by the pinky finger of a man who was three times your size, but the two managed to run off before consciousness slipped away from them. During their days of planning on how to fight someone who could decimate them with their pinky finger, the bumbling duo saw a marvelous sight. Well, more like disaster than marvelous. But still marvelous as you never see guys falling from the sky, obliterating a house and getting up and walking away these days. Figuring if this man of steel could destroy a house, surely they could bring the Pinky Annihilator to ruin, right? So through countless days of pushing and forcing the man to go through with it, Keno and Marko introduced the newest member of their gang to the burly, brute. When met with the Pinky of Doom, instead of succumbing to it as the two real heroes did, their new friend merely broke it with the twist of his fingers.
It was from that day on Keno and Marko figured they never needed a gang again.
General Description:
When you look at Keno, you don’t necessarily think “He’s gonna kick my ass, oh shit, I’m gonna get messed up bad!” At an unimposing five foot eleven, Basco’s stature is only met with his equally disappointing and lean one hundred and seventy-five pounds. Not exactly a brutal martial artist, but more of a fit, athletic human. Not to mention the reminiscent appearance of a boyish face set with those Japanese high-curving eyes and chocolate and cinnamon eyes. Not very hardened at all. And the life of a fighter and gangster is only further disproved by his choice in clothing.
Instead of martial art garb or baggy clothing, Keno is found wearing black canvas pants that drape around his feet but are held and cinched tight around the waist, if a little low, by his cloth belt. Wear and tear over the years has left them in slightly bad shape, but nothing too disgraceful. And what would a good pair of pants be without shoes? Loose black sneakers will often be found on his feet, though due to them never being tied properly, you’ll find Keno traveling barefoot. A black, short sleeved hoodie is always seen under his black coat with raised collar. And we’re not talking about it being popped up, but a naturally tall collar reaching to his chin on its own. On his hands an old pair of leather fingerless gloves have found their home instead of hand wraps or wristbands, attributing just a little to the gang life.
Always worn on his chin is the small goatee he’s been sporting since he turned eighteen, the only intentional facial hair you’ll find on the young fighter’s face. As far as his hair goes, you’ll find it a bit longer than medium length, normally a mess and left shaggy. Very rarely will Keno fix up his dark red, almost brown hair and look decent, though for simplicity’s sake he will tie the back into a short ponytail. Of course all this is kept under an old black fedora that’s been in some good fights and some bad ones, the beat up old hat losing much of its stiff form. All in all, Keno’s appearance comes out a bit like some new age beatnik or peacekeeper. If only people didn’t think that when they first see him, it’d save them bruised kidneys and a lost wallet.
Role-play Sample:
Like any good plot, the day was bright and beautiful. Colors seemed way more vivid than the day before, a nice upgrade from standard to HD in Keno’s honest opinion. With the flick of his fingers, the brim of his hat was tilted upward so he could see the town’s landscape in its full range of color. Naturally the day would be a great one meant for pillaging and vandalizing, all his favorite activities before setting down to a nice game of Grand Larceny to commit virtual crimes against humanity. Yeah, he knew he had vowed to never be a nerd again, but damn it if those damn things weren’t hard to give up!
You don’t live twenty years of life dependent on video games and expect one tragic catastrophe involving the loss of your family all at once to knock you down enough to give up the addiction. Besides, that was two years ago, it was time for Keno to move on and let the past be past. As a wise old man said in a small village you’re sure to have never heard of, “The past is history, the future is mystery and that’s why today is called the present”. And who said video games didn’t teach you anything? Of course the man who learned martial arts and how to fire ki blasts all from video games would say something like that. What being living proof and all.
Still, even a gangster with a nerdy underbelly could enjoy the fresh air, bright sun and warm animals content enough to make themselves known. Keno’s idea of a great day indeed. Now if he could just make it back to his little shack he called home, he could hole himself away for the next few hours playing games. Or maybe watching some old classic movies. With a day like this, anything was possible…
…Just like the massive pink colored beam of light arcing through the sky and heading straight for the local game store, Game ‘n Go. Keno only watched in horror as this bright and peaceful day slowed to a halt as if everything happened frame by frame, the colors dulled to ashen grays and off whites, the beam turning silver as it landed on its mark. An earth shattering blow shook Keno’s world to the very core as he was blown away even from across the street, his body flipping slowly through the air like a rag doll as he had no power, barely even any control over himself to prevent what was happening. Landing up against a tree, his hazy and blurring vision saw only shock waves of destruction fill the streets as the store he worshipped at daily was left to rubble and game cases and CDs.
Everything still in slow motion, Keno turned his head toward the source of the beam to see two flying warriors locked in battle. Now he knew why heroes always lured enemies away from cities. So tragedies like this wouldn’t happen. Looking back to the catastrophe, Keno ignored the good Samaritans pulled people from the blast zone and saw only his haven reduced to oblivion. And he knew exactly why.
To escape the casualties of war.
