Profession Changes
#1
As many of you have already noted, there are some annoyances with the way the Profession system is currently run. Since the problems are very specific, we ultimately decided that only a couple of small tweaks are needed to address them:

1.) Currently, every time you switch Professions, your rank automatically reverts to 1. This ruling has now been changed. Instead, whenever you switch Professions, your rank is only reduced by one, to a minimum of one. For example, if I was a Level 3 Mailman and I wanted to switch to a chef, I would be a Level 2 Chef, instead of only a Level 1 Chef. But if I was a Level 1 Mailman, I'd just become a Level 1 Chef.

2.) Currently, doing a quest outside of your Profession incurs a zeni penalty. This penalty has now been abolished; you get paid the same amount of zeni for every job quest you do, but you are still identified by a "main profession." So if you're a mailman, and you want to do a chef job on the side, it's okay.

The official Rules page will be amended shortly. As always, you're welcome to ask questions or give constructive commentary. Thank you for your suggestions.

Side jobs don't count toward rank total right?

Does honesty earn respect or inspire revenge? Is it smarter to attack the strong or annihilate the weak?

I don't understand this.

As it was, if you're a "medic" and you do a quest that involves your character assassinating someone, there's a zeni penalty. You would lose 50 zeni per Rank in that case. So, while the max reward for a Rank 1 quest is 300 zeni, if it wasn't related to your job you could only get a max of 250.

We took that out.

EDIT: Bottom line is, more money for quests.

So do non-profession quests count towards moving up in rank?

No.

You can only increase in rank by doing jobs related to your profession but now you can at least make decent coin doing a profession that's not related.

Unrelated jobs do not count toward ranking up.

But if I get rank 2 in my profession, I earn more money for doing ALL job quests?

The higher your rank, the higher the range of zeni you can earn. So if you're a Rank 2 Adventurer, you get paid equally for doing any job you undertake, but only Adventurer jobs count towards getting to Rank 3.

EDIT: Here's the rank chart for zeni:

Rank 1: 100~300
Rank 2: 200~400
Rank 3: 300~500
Rank 4: 400~600
Rank 5: 500~700

Yay! That severely diminishes my worry of coming up with a creative name to do whatever I want. Assuming I get into rping a lot, anyway.

In that case, I have to wonder about the point of having job titles at all. It seems like a needlessly cumbersome limitation.

Since practically everything can be redefined as a job now (staff will have to clarify on whether this is new policy), I don't see why Zeni isn't just programmed into being based off your character count like XP is.

(As a side note, that has to be the first time I've seen that chart. I think one of the main problems people had with the bloody system was that it was so obfuscated. 'Oh, if I go up in rank, which takes an indeterminate number of jobs, I might earn an indeterminate amount of extra money.')

Not to shoot you down, but the bolded text would require a little number like you have XP. As of now the staff have to edit a text value to update Zeni. Problem is the XP system already operates off the banking system which was intended for money. It isn't worth doing when we have a system that already does the job.

That's actually always been the case. Anything could always be a Job Quest. People just didn't do it.

Those charts were added to the Rules forum fairly recently in the "Money, Items, and Professions" thread.

The point of the system is to add longevity to item and zeni gain.

We decided to keep it manual instead of automatic to allow staffers to reward quality.

This system seems fine. Yeah, you can get just as much money for whatever you do, but you can only work towards getting more money for your quests by sticking to your main profession. Now it's like an "area of expertise", as opposed to a profession, which is cool.

So someone can start as a 'Mailman' (or a Prostitute in Vad's case) and make Rank 5 and NEVER do a Mailman(or Prostitute) job again and still make top wages for his class. I don't find that correct at all.

That's correct. To actually get to Rank 5, though, they'll have done quite a few "mailman" jobs already, though.

Said this in the chatbox already, but for the record, I think it's a hell of a lot better than the old system.

Entirely off topic, but to my knowledge, comments in the chatbox don't disappear on their own.

Nope. Perhaps an outside force is manipulating those comments.
