The trailer actually was pretty cool.

Unfortunately, I spent most of the time thinking "why would they want to attach the 'Mortal Kombat' name to it?" They bastardized basically all the characters to make them fit into a world that might be remotely believable. I, personally, don't really care, but I can't imagine it will do more than annoy people who do like the MK series and seem convoluted and awkward to the people who don't know anything about it.

How do you make a side scrolling fight game into a movie anyway?

Fighting to the bitter end is an advantage when your opponent does not wish to perish.

Poorly.

The original Mortal Kombat movies actually did a reasonably good job of sticking to the story of the game. They were also unbelievably awful.

The plot is (IIRC) basically that Shang whatshisface is a representative to some kind of alternate reality/demon realm that's had its eye on Earth for some time. I think they tried to invade before, but shit got "REAL" with the warriors of Earth or something and it ended up as just a horrible fucking mess for both sides.

Earth and Asshole Realm agreed to some sort of pact where they'd hold a pre-set number of tournaments between worldor something. If Earth could win one, they were, like, home free. (I think?)

So basically the demon realm has been raping the tournaments for a couple centuries now and it's getting down to the line or something.

That was the plot of the original movie anyway and it could have been cool if it wasn't badly written otherwise.

Oitentia, you should be eviscerated and dragged by your guts through the street for comparing MK to DBZ.

Not just her, but Michael Jai White, who played Spawn, a small part in The Dark Knight, and a couple of those Tyler Perry movies. He's Jax.

I actually found the first movie to be really good and a classic, but I do acknowledge the cheeseyness. And yes, I do see that this is a drastic alteration of the storyline to fit a real world current dark setting, but this isn't something that hasn't been done to Batman, successfully.

The characters, while drastically altered, seem very... Honestly, really good ways to pass these characters off in a real world setting that isn't based on a martial arts tournament in another dimension for aliens. The first movie, while a lot different from this, had to deal with the same thing of explaining these characters in a real world setting (Cage freaks out about Raiden, Scorpion, and Sub Zero's abilities).

It isn't strange at all that Cage was murdered, because he's been "killed" in most of the game storylines too. Its sorta an accepted thing now, so it fit the character. It IS odd that Scorpion is after Sub Zero, but then, as I recall, the games and movies split on that point and I believe Scorpion was after Sub Zero for something that SZ's brother did to him (actually, I think MK:A tried to say the same thing in order to bring SZ back). This was all before (from what I recall reading) SZ reformed from his assassin ways or whatever and went a more positive route.

This does seem more 2010 rather than 80s, and yeah, its darker in a Saw generation sorta way, but I actually don't mind that. I have to say, I'm getting a bit excited really, because while its so different, if they actually do make this into a movie, I'll watch it. As long as those scenes are part of the movie that they go through with. I was giddy at the Reptile part, and then seeing Baraka had me a bit "Oh, wow, nice" given that I'd already seen Baraka mutilated in MK:A. They explained them into the real world fairly well.

I'm intrigued. So I'd like to see how far this rabbit hole goes.

Oh, and I really thought they were talking to Kano at first and expected it to end with his eye lighting up but the moment they mentioned Sub Zero, I got a bit happier because Kano would have been too easy to put in that setting.

For the record, MK actually has a pretty seriously fleshed out storyline.

It's not exactly going to win any awards, and it's not particularly original, but there you go.

But, video game movie.

The best it can shoot for is 'alright.'

Based on the trailer, I definitely agree.

Looks overly cheesy and poorly scripted. Sorta like that old franchise of movies back in the day... what was that called again? OH RIGHT. MORTAL FUCKING KOMBAT.

These titties get two thumbs down.

Scorpion is the baddest character. So yeah, really.

Edit: And yeah, it does look fan made.

at this point they should make a bunch of not-vg characters based on the current premise. the only certainty is that they'll piss off a lot of fans by trying to reinvent vg characters from the ground up.

i think it's cute how hollywood is trying to tap into the exploding popularity of mma with these kinds of movies. but, there needs to be another bruce lee who knows both combat and cinematography to be the writer/director/leading role to pull it off. this will certainly be another b-movie littered with athletes doing stage kung fu and bad cgi.

also, cage is not dead. as always, that was a stunt double.
