[11] Buffs, Debuffs, and Death
#1
Buffs and Debuffs

For those who don’t know, a “Buff” is something that benefits a character while a “Debuff” is something that hinders them

Certain actions your character takes can have ramifications for them down the road. This comes in the form of Buffs or Debuffs. These can be awarded for almost anything, though that doesn’t mean we’ll be handing them out like candy. A common use of Buffs and Debuffs will be to affect players as they participate in sagas, given them rewards for a job well done or penalties for trying something too risky. Buffs and Debuffs can also be awarded for Quests or Jobs in addition to XP or Zeni.

There are no specific guidelines for Buffs and Debuffs. They can take almost any form and having varying degrees of severity. Some of them might affect your Combat Ability, making you weaker or strong. Some of them might give you a discount on your next shop purchase. Some of them may even remove your access to one of your character’s Abilities. Most Buffs and Debuffs last for a set period of time, but may also expire after a given event, such as traveling to a different planet or completing your next Quest.

Death

When a player dies, their spirit is disrupted and, as a result, they lose access to a great deal of their power. Death comes in the form of a Debuff that reduces their Combat Ability by 50% while they are in the living world. While a player has the “Death” Debuff, they can travel freely between the Afterlife and the living world once they complete a certain Quest, though in the Afterlife they will have full access to their Combat Ability.

In addition to the Penance Quest there is another special Quest that may be requested by someone who is dead. That is the Transference Quest. A Transference Quest is requested the same way a Penance Quest is and functions almost exactly the same way. Once the Transference Quest is complete, the player can freely move their character from the Afterlife to the Living World. While in the Living World, things function normally. It is not necessary to complete a Transference Quest in order to get or complete a Penance Quest. Zeni can only be spent by a dead person who has completed their Transference Quest.

While in the living world, the only distinguishable difference between someone who is dead is a halo that floats above their head. Otherwise they can walk around and interact with the rest of the world as though they were alive. While Dead, though, there are limitations placed upon the character. While a player may write personal or group RolePlays, they may not participate in Sagas, Jobs, or standard Quests while Dead.

There are a couple of ways to remove the Death Debuff and restore life to your character. The simplest way is to visit Baba, on Earth, and pay her a fee to fully restore your soul and have Death removed. Aside from that, a player can ask for a special Penance Quest on the Quest Forum. The Penance Quest will be designed for that character, specifically, and upon completion will remove the Debuff. Once a Penance Quest is given, the player can not request a different one. As stated above, a player may not undertake any normal Quests until the Penance Quest is complete and Death has been removed.
