Before a moderator locks a thread, would it be possible for them to post a sentence or two explaining why the thread will be locked? Then, we can know what behavior lead the thread to be locked and how to avoid it in the future.

Even though it was obvious that the thread was getting out of hand (which is why I stay out of touchy topics like that) Jarka still makes a good point.

I think they just lock threads in order to prevent them from being zombied.

In the Kame House I will close threads more actively, when they become obviously off topic or out of hand. That's really the only place where the discussion will be more closely watched for threads to be locked.
It's pretty much up to the moderator's discretion, so I'm not going to be able to list things that would always result in a closed thread. If you disagree with a thread closing, feel free to contact me privately and I would be happy to discuss it with you. They can always be reopened.
