The second of her parents' three children, Valora Crow had a fairly uneventful childhood until she started showing an interest in martial arts around the age of 12. Although she came into the study a little later than others, she quickly developed her prowess at hand to hand combat within her school. After a series of fights with her parents over her neglected academic studies, she traveled the world training at different martial arts schools and learning what she could from different styles.

The last school she trained in was a monastery carved into a mountain cliffside. The monks had taken her in after she'd sat in meditation at the foot of the mountain for three weeks straight. Moved by her genuine dedication and enduring will, they brought her into their ranks. After three years, however, this training was disrupted. A young woman appeared demanding that the abbot relinquish one of the items kept within the monastery's inner sanctum. After the abbot refused and insisted she leave, an orange light crackled around the woman's hands and she struck the abbot down. After seizing the object herself, she released another mysterious blast and collapsed the entire cliff face, killing all of the monks inside. Valora and a small band of monks had been out in the nearby forest gathering water when they heard the massive landslide. They soon saw that all that was left of their haven was broken stones and raw memories. However, they did see a young woman and a group of four others leave the scene as they approached.

"How do you know me?" The stocky man eyed the martial artist, not at all unnerved by the young woman’s impassive gaze.

"We have a mutual acquaintance," Valora replied coolly as she leaned a shoulder against the concrete wall of the alley. “I’d like you to tell me where she is, actually.”

The man squinted his heavy-lidded eyes, and the corners of his mouth hardened. “You’re going to have to be a little more specific, girlie. And better hurry. A few zeni doesn’t buy much time,” he said gruffly, a hint of a snarl closing off his words.

Valora nodded slightly, shifting so that she could face the man squarely with her back on the wall. “A woman paid a visit to a certain monastery several months ago. She made a request my master wasn’t prepared to satisfy. I want to find her to set things right between them. He was not able to leave the monastery himself, though, so I’ve come in his place.”

Valora had tried to keep her tone light, but she knew an edge had crept into it when her throat tightened at the thought of her home buried beneath the collapsed mountainside. Her eyes were trained on the man’s. The man stood with statue-like stillness, but his face was an agitated frenzy of furrowing eyebrows, flaring nostrils, and darting eyes. Valora’s breath shortened slightly with anticipation. A dark brown curl tapped her check incessantly, but she ignored it. She eased further against the wall, drawing a heel against it as well. The man was going to move, and she was going to be ready!

Suddenly the man beamed at Valora, his smile so broad his eyes were almost closed. “I think I can help you.”

He moved.

A switchblade was in his hand and driving toward the woman’s gut. She launched off the wall to the man’s left, wrapping her grip around his knife hand and thrusting a knee into his solar plexus. She pivoted smoothly and a hard punch caught the man’s jaw. He thrashed as he fell back, slicing into the skin above Valora’s wrist guard. She recoiled for a moment, but knew she had to press her advantage while he was still recovering. This man was her only lead to finding the woman she’d seen at the monastery. If Valora lost him now, she wouldn’t know where to look from here….

Valora knew someone was behind her a moment before steely hands closed around her throat. Even the fighter’s gasp was choked off. She was lifted just enough so that she had to stand on the tips of her toes to support her weight as she clawed at the massive paws. The stout man, winded from the first blow, approached with the knife ready once more.

“I…I meant…” he struggled to form words through his gasps. “I’ll help finish…what she started….”

Valora bared her teeth in a soundless hiss as the knife swayed closer.

“Who’s down there?!” someone barked from one of the balconies above the alley.

“Go,” Valora’s captor growled at the first man. The smaller man glanced discontentedly at the woman before turning and tripping deeper into the alley, letting the knife slit the khaki leg of her pants and nip at her skin as he passed. The other man threw Valora roughly against the closest wall. Her head smacked the hard surface, and dazed, she slid to the ground. The sound of running footsteps faded behind her, the noise almost lost in her own harsh coughing.

A weight dropped beside Valora and a man stood up from his crouch, a strong frame visible under the loose fabrics of his robes. “Sister, look at me.” The monk knelt beside Valora, tilting her chin toward him with a light hand. The girl met his concerned brown eyes for a moment before looking past them. She no longer saw her Brother and the walls of the alley. That last glimpse of the stout man filled her sight. Even as grey seeped in at the corners of her vision, she saw his face and knew that she would see this man again. And he would be the one fainting against a wall.

If she was merciful.
