When did a law get passed that you have to be 19 to buy cigarettes all of a sudden?

Me and my sister were in Hess, the conveneint store(Hess), I was getting a sub and my sister came up to me telling me that I had to get my moms cigs cuz the dude said that its a law since the first of the year.

My sister has bought my moms cigarettes before... until now... and they actually have a sign saying "We card...No Tobacco under 19"

Is this bull crap for real?

Here in Canada it's a provincial thing, so I would imagine in the States it's something that varies from state to state.

Here legal age for booze/tobacco/etc is 18. That's pretty much Canada-wide but there are places where it's different.

I live in NJ and it changed around here a year or two ago. It's probably more and my sense of time is probably just bad, but still. I don't smoke so it didn't bother me but yeah.

In Slovenia, you used to be able to buy cigarettes if you were 15 or older. This changed last year when they put a new law into action. You now have to be 18 or older, plus you are forbidden to smoke in working and public places (that includes bars and restaurants).

Same here, 19 or older and no smoking in public places. I thought it was indoor public places but yesterday I was at the train station and it was outdoors and a cop bitched at a couple guys for smoking. Very strange.

That's how it is in Australia too. Last year or the year before, they passed a law that public smoking was illegal. That included being a certain distance outside of a public place, ie. you can't smoke just outside a shopping centre entrance.
