Pets may be terribly imbalanced in terms of fighting power, but several abilities (Cry of the Damned & Net, along with Hypnosis) can counter them. Plus, gaining a pet causes the character to permanently lose HP (dogs cause the smallest HP loss; bears the most) so if you can counter the pet then the other character is at a pretty bad disadvantage.
If you want to avoid running into pets in the Arena mode, don't choose opponents with suspiciously low HP. I figure that's why Tim has been seeing so many bears, always trying to pick on the seemingly easiest targets :E

I go for people with HP in the 80~100 range. That's usually high enough to mean no pets, but low enough to mean no "Vitality" special. The result is a lot of wasted lvls on HP.

I actually do this as well. I go for people in that range, and sometimes just a little over 100 which tends to result in flails and clubs for some reason.

I swear, my characters have like this horrible obsession with just tossing their weapons to the side. Just did a match where one used a club to start, nailed the opp down to 50% in one hit. Instead of following, they dropped the club for no reason and grabbed a sword. Then threw it at the opp, to grab the pitchfork. They lost that round. This new fight, they just never pulled out a weapon. I notice my weapon masters seem to do it the most, which is frustrating given the perk of a WM having a weapon.

They list the "Thief" skill as "Super" but it can definitely be used more than once per battle. I was really hoping that wouldn't be the case.
