I got Mass Effect 1 for Christmas right when it came out, but i ended quiting my job a couple weeks later. I was so low on the funds that i sold most of my games (Mass Effect included). My friend just let me borrow it like two days ago so i have been rekindling the flame. I had forgotten how awesome the game was. Now i cant wait to finish it and quickly buy the 2nd one.

I finally just finished the first one, and I'm blown away. The story telling (once you got towards the later half) picked up tremendously and it was superb. I loved the story involving the Reapers, and how realistic their take on space civilization was when taking into account the current state of astronomy hypotheses. Furthermore, the characters were, mostly, fantastic. Some were more boring than others (I wasn't a fan of Kaidan, however, I have to admit that I stopped running him in my group as soon as Ashley showed up. I also stopped using Garrus once Tali was available, but I cared enough about Garrus to check on him and talk to him a lot.) I let Kaidan be the one to die over Ash, since her smart ass bitch persona was awesome to me "Why is it that when someone says 'With all due respect', they really mean 'Kiss my ass?'" Tali was awesome and I hear she'll be a romance option in 2 - So I might have to cheat on Liara to go for her.

I was mostly using Ashley and Liara for the longest time, but then when I did the quests with Wrex, I felt that having that many biotic abilities while I supplied the tech and manually controlled their abilities just made combat much easier. So I shelved Ashley, and eventually shelved Tali as well, learning to fall in love with Wrex. He was easily the most interesting character to have in your group for decision scenes, though Liara and Ashley had some fantastic background talks as well. Wrex and his elevator comments were priceless, and I really grew to like the guy.

EDIT: For the curious, capped Paragon Ending with a saved Council, Anderson as the final choice, Liara as the romance, Kaidan as the dead crewmember, and Wrex stayed alive. Was also level capped since I felt the need to do every single sidequest and planet.

[spoiler]So I kill the Reaper-man (up to this point everyone survived. I used Legion for tech spec, Garrus for fireteam, Samara for biotic spec, Miranda for second fireteam, Garrus for survivor escort) and he blows up. Me, Grunt, and Miranda are still alive, despite the fact Miranda was shot in the gut earlier. Whatever, awesome. We run away and get to the ship and wtf Zaeed is dead?! I didn't use him for anything! Why is Zaeed dead?! Goddammit. So the plan now is to go fight the Reaper-man with Zaeed in my party. With any luck, my babysitting him will keep him alive.[/spoiler]

[spoiler]Sometimes they die when left to fight the Collectors while you fight the human-reaper. I lost Tali that way in my second playthrough.[/spoiler]

I did that, too, but he still survived in my game. <.<; Dunno what happened.

using this you can add squad members before actually acquiring them. Why would you do this? Turns out bioware had all missions available form the start so they recorded dialogue for missions you aren't able to bring them along on in the game proper. Legion in particular is delightful, I was disappointed I couldn't bring him on more missions.

Oh! BTW, I got the 'No One Left Behind' achievement last night. Well, more like three or four nights ago, but that's pretty close. Kept the dumb bastard alive finally.

lol i was in a rush so didnt get to finish what i was writing lol I shot at it for god knows how long with a smg then found some ammo for my sniper rifle. I continued shooting with the smg til the barrier shut down I fired ONE shot from my sniper rifle after its barrier thing went down and the f'ing thing died.

Well, everyone on my squad made it! No one on my team was left behind, and I got the acheivement. Success, right? I mean no one died... [spoiler]EXCEPT THE REST OF THE ENTIRE CEREBRUS CREW. Hooray watching poor Kelly Chambers become liquefied Reaper baby food. Shouldn't have waited to do all those sidequest missions. =( [/spoiler]

I managed to get Legion AND Grunt killed. I was PISSED. I just finished it today, but I didn't create a separate save at the beginning of the collectors ship so that I could go back and try to save everyone. DAMNIT! Maybe I'll double check the saves and see what's what, but I saved after picking Legion for the vent and he got smoked. Fuck.

Who was the fire team leader?

Because anyone you send will die if the leader's not a strong leader. =x

The Justicar was my fire team leader. Grunt lead the distraction team. I don't have a save that will let me redo the entire thing (picking the specialist and fire team leader over again included) so I'm doing the new game+ deal. I'll be a renegade this time and skip dialog like a mofo.
