Mass Effect 1/2
Purposefully almost wiping out an entire race is hardly out of the Renegade area, though. I understand it's a 'grey' area, but you can't tell me that it was a 'good' choice.

Given that the alternative was to either watch as the Krogan take over the galaxy or wipe them extinct, it definitely wasn't a 'bad' one.

Yep, hence why it's grey.

I find that there are a lot of 'grey' renegade choices that you can easily argue are for the greater good. Like the last major option in ME1. Other times it's just being a dick. That's why I like to not go PURELY Paragon/Renegade, sometimes I'll take the other option if it suits the character I'm going for.

I'm doing a Renegade-only runthrough at the moment (through ME1, eventually to 2), and it's extremely frustrating. I want to max renegade for the intimidation bonus, but that means my character essentially has to be a dick. rawr

Weeeelllll if you wanna have max renegade points without having to be a dick through the whole game then...you need to look into the noveria glitch. Not sure if its been patched on pc or not but I know on xbox its still available.

Essentially...Look it up...Noveria Infinite paragon/renegade...

See I had a level 59 character that became level 59 right at the end of ME1 when I killed Saren. So I didnt feel like playing the game again for just 1 level. Well I started back on it 2 days ago. I transfered to me2 with the 59 as a maxe out paragon. Well paragon isnt exactly wha tI wnat. So...I turned back on my 59 played through (Im on noveria right now just finished the glitch) .

Ok so now Im level 60 Im on noveria im about 2 hours from the end of the game. Meaning ill get to transfer A level 60 character for the first time lol!!!

The cure is a shotgun, the cure is whatever blunt instrument one can salvage.Whomever finds themselves too proper will be the first to perish. And you know nothing that matters now.

If there weren't direct gameplay benefits in maxing out a specific track before taking more "natural" choices, then I would do the same thing.

Not being able to make the conversation check when you complete both Jack and Miranda's loyalty missions, though, is complete bullshit and requires a TON of either Paragon or Renegade.

Granted, its not as bad as other BioWare games like KOTOR or Jade Empire, but it's still annoying. I like that there's an aesthetic piece to the decisions that makes it evident what you want to do without forcing you to do it. Because, honestly, everyone knows that each decision they make could have lasting implications that get explored in the next game. The decisions should be based on what your version of Shepard would do or what you think might turn into the more interesting scenario in the next game. There's not enough emphasis on that and too much emphasis on filling your little blue/red meter.

Yep, I don't like the mechanic for that reason. My favourite take on morality in RPGs is Dragon Age Origins. No incentives to do anything besides what your character would do, no telling you what's right and wrong, which allows for a full spectrum of choices between blatant good, blatant dickery, and grey.

That said, I haven't found it got in the way that much since I always focused on one or the other. I always still had one of the bars entirely full by the end.
