I suppose you could just say the collar creates a digital replica of you which is projected into the world with your consciousness inside it (the contestant's real bodies would be kept in stasis), and if the collar explodes, you die in real life too (ala the Matrix).
But, you can't really go back and change it
you could easily bullshit your way around it though in future explanations, just saying it 'replicates' the body or whatever, not necessarily through DNA.
