New Territory!!! - Raz - 10-09-2007

Ever since the collapse of Dbl I've been thinking of doing an Rpg in a new genre compared to what I'm normally accustomed to. One of the reasons my most recent site didn't succeed was from the lack of... eh... dedication when faced with a success equal to that of Chubbs and other 'high class' sites such as it. Basically it was "Alright, that's what the pinnacle of a Dragonball Z oriented Rpg site looks like so why I am doing this?" which led to the death of my motivation.

Now I'm looking into this a little more optimistically as I've a few ideas I thought might be able to break my stubbornness to role play. Curious as to how everyone else may see them so I decided to take a look at people's reaction by placing them on display here for questions and comments as to if it would be somewhere they would be interested in participating in.

Quote:Genre: Samurai
Setting: Japan, branching into Eastern Asia at a later time
Time Period: 13th Century
Summary: Taking on the role of a raw student at first, your task is to train yourself in the way of the Samurai and hone your skills in combat through a Sensei gaining knowledge and/or relationships with fellow students. After leaving the Dojo there are multiple options available such as learning another style from another Dojo, working for a Shogun or Lord, freelance killer, and anything else that might suit your fancy.

Since this is gradually aging Rpg there are historical events that will occur such as the Portuguese and Americans arrival but these too will be event-related. Introductions to gun powered will also yield new classes as the samurai won't only be limited to a sword for combat. Techniques will also rise that defy reality so the Rpg won't be cold turkey to the fictional aspects of 'spicing up' combat. Eventually samurai will acquire land which to build upon (Headquarters equivalent) and the capability to purchase vehicles (think mules and really small boats at first).

Death will be handled quite differently depending on the situation your character is in. Count on references to reincarnations being put into play.

Quote:Genre: Pirates
Setting: Caribbean at first, gradually the entire world will be available
Time Period: 17th Century
Summary: Does swashbuckling and stealing women pitch your tent? Well this should be the perfect outlet to let loose those experiences in an organized and Rpg-like atmosphere. Done during the age of piracy, this role playing experience revolves around the aspect of gathering and maintaining a crew in order to sail the high seas and plunder the riches of the world. A lowly scallywag at first will provide ample time for you to hone your skills and find the job most suited to you.

For every evil there is a good as you'll find in the option of joining the Royal British Navy as an officer, moving up through the ranks killing pirates and offering their heads for a just bounty for the Mother Country. With the right leverage the possibility of commanding five or ten ships at a time is out of no one's reach. Either side will yield the opportunity of becoming Captain of your very own vessel, should you play your cards right...

Quote:Genre: 'Ninja'
Setting: N/A
Time Period: N/A
Summary: Ready to say Fucku no Jutsu? Not so fast now, glorify what you know about Naruto into the more recent world and that is what this concept is about. Roving cities of cars and civilians, planes and skyscrapers, fields and freeways all providing a beautiful scene for chaos in a small re-imagining or the Naruto world.

Missions become more daring as civil strife prevails in a failing world. A ninja must broaden their arsenal to deal with the perplexity of weapons that'll do more then leave a little flesh wound upon contact.

All are rough ideas mostly concocted within the last few weeks or so. While each of them are different there can and will be cameos in each of them from either an obvious or not so obvious source for that little smirk while reading should one of these get into the stage of becoming a 'work in progress'.

Once again I'd love some feedback from people about each of them if possible.

If you can get the whole tone of your backstory and descriptions to match the blurb about your "Ninja" idea, I think you'd have something pretty awesome.

The Samurai and Pirate themes, while certainly interesting enough in their own right, don't seem to have the same kind of potential as the Ninja idea, imo.

New Territory!!! - Raz - 10-10-2007

Even a bit vague I personally merited my Naruto-based idea as a larger possibility then the other two... feel that it just seems to have more longevity then the other two themes.

Attempted to sway a bit from it given Josh and Reb having their desire on the genre but I figured I'd throw it in for the hell of it.

New Territory!!! - Bujin - 10-10-2007

Ehh. Not as crazy about the ninja idea as Rad is. Though it's still interesting.

<.<

I'm into the pirate idea, though. If this is a voting situation, then that'd be my vote.

New Territory!!! - Nori - 10-10-2007

I'd love the Samurai idea.

New Territory!!! - Raz - 10-10-2007

/is divided by votes

Any personal reasons your decisions held your attention most?

New Territory!!! - Dehan - 10-10-2007

Having visited New Jersey and New York I'd love to be able to perform the shadow clone jutsu and freak some people out on subways lol. A ninja rpg based in a modern city or whatever would be cool

New Territory!!! - Tobias - 10-10-2007

I like them all... seriously. But I've been wanting a pirate RPG since like... forever. The ninja concept is probably best in general but for me specifically its pirates.

New Territory!!! - Raz - 10-10-2007

That makes...

Samurai - 1
Pirates - 2
Ninja - 2

I apologize for being anal about hearing how everyone feels about these, it's only because I want to get a theme that I can get a large backing behind. I've many ideas for all three of them but I don't want to start on something that'll get only a small gathering.

New Territory!!! - Tobias - 10-10-2007

I'll play any of them. Well, as much as I play anything.

New Territory!!! - Raditzu - 10-10-2007

Would your Ninja idea actually be a Naruto RPG? If that's the case, then I withdraw my vote for it and move to Samurai.

I don't think the modern-ninja thing would be cool if it were based on Naruto. I imagined more of a "Ninja Gaiden" feel when I read that.

New Territory!!! - Raz - 10-10-2007

It would basically be, more or less, using certain techniques originating from the anime in a world more realistic to that of our own. Using strategy and the urban territory around one to take down an opponent opposed to utterly powerful and overbearing attacks to completely obliterate someone. The story would provide more background, having to preform covert fights in ungodly locations (side of a skyscraper, sewer pipes, etc.) without being discovered by the story's main protagonist.

Little too blunt with the first description, sorry.

New Territory!!! - CoolSpice - 10-10-2007

My vote goes to the ninja idea. I'm curious, would the charcters be just Naruto characters, or custom, or both?

New Territory!!! - Bujin - 10-10-2007

Because I prefer pirates, really. xD I was going to write a short story/novella about pirates, anyway, but if you make a site, that'd scratch my "Hey! I want to write about pirates!" itch.

New Territory!!! - Super Buu - 10-10-2007

Why not have Pirates AND ninjas? It would be a lot more interesting to have them both. I don't like a game where everyone's the same, y'know? Instead of choosing one theme to base the entire RPG on, I'd incorporate lots of different 'classes' like that, each very different.

If going with only one, I'd say Pirates, as you can do a lot with the maps, travelling and such. Islands and kraken HOOOOO

New Territory!!! - Raz - 10-10-2007

CoolSpice Wrote:My vote goes to the ninja idea. I'm curious, would the charcters be just Naruto characters, or custom, or both?

Fully custom. The only reference to the show would be the abilities, a cameo or two, and possibly a few weapons.

Hm... very Final Fantasy, Greg. xD I had actually thought about that once or twice during the discussion thinking that maybe I should compromise and do a mixture. Thing was that I had thought about both ideas to a point of being able to hold their own alone. Now, if I WERE to merge it I think there would have to be a certain level of difficulty added given the unhumanly nature of a ninja... like 'air pirates' or something.

Pirates vs Ninjas would be cool. Like the old online debate. Do that one.

And throw Samurai in there too, for good measure.

New Territory!!! - Kirano - 10-11-2007

I feel the theme for ninjas should be original. I'm skeptical on you basing it on naruto. When I pictured 'ninja' I was on the idea of shinobi with kunai and shurukens in a more realsitic sense, rather than the use of jutsu's. But if you're clinging on to a naruto theme for ninja's, I'd go for Samurai.

I used to play ninja vs. samurai, a custom map on WC3, and that was really fun. What's more cool than two classes that are totally different, but yet weirdly balanced?
