Why play Mages?

Kaden has pretty much elaborated my feelings on Veigar (thanks Kaden!). He, on paper, is good. Yes, I am not disputing that. My point is merely that why choose him when you can choose a more effecient caster and do the same thing as him, without the drawbacks that he has (slow as shit, no built in escapes, tricky skillshot stun). I have actually, once, seen a great Veigar; back when I still played AP Kog'maw all the time I went up against a really good Veigar and at the end of the game it became a battle between which of us could gib each other first, and then the survivor's team would win the teamfight.

But that's once, out of all the times I've seen him played (which admittedly isn't much). Every one of those times I am absolutely certain that they could've played any other caster and been much more useful to the team.

Of course this isn't accounting for fun, which trumps everything in non-ranked games IMHO. So I wont bitch and whinge, but I will cringe a little
