A Rebreather only lets you breathe underwater or in space. It doesn't affect your body's resistance to those two environments. If you go deep enough underwater, you'll get crushed by the immense pressure. If you go into outer space without some kind of force field, you'll be an ice cube in less than a second. Survival allows you to breathe without air as well as be able to adapt to those environments so you're not completely affected by it.
While conceptually a robot doesn't need oxygen, their systems can still short out from the water (or be crushed by the pressure example listed above), or freeze over in outer space.

_=So wake me when it's through
I don't want to feel the things that you do
Don't worry, I'll be fine
I just don't want this dream, wake me up inside=_
