This may come as a shock to you, but if you ask 5 different people something, you will get 5 different opinions.
If some of them think or view dying soley as a punishment, this does not make them actually correct, does it?
If you understand that you died for IC storyline reasons, then why go continuously on talking about it just because someone says different?
I think they altered the afterlife from what it was, because usually when someone gets there, they are alone and it's not always fun constantly writing in isolation. Activity usually dropped after someone got into the afterlife. So they made it so that if you really wanted to get the hell out as soon as possible, then you could work towards it.
