I have Asperger Syndrome, which can be both a boon and a curse. Don't bother looking it up if you want a quick definition - there is none.
From what I know, though, autism isn't something you can develop at 7 years old. It's with you your whole life, same as Asperger's (which is a form of autism). I didn't know I had AS until I was 16 or so, at which point I'd already been kicked out of my College for my inability to do the coursework (regardless of my exam results, which were above average). It bites.
Edit: There's an awesome article I was sent on the topic, but no idea how to upload it. It was written by a lecturer at the university I'm applying to, who happens to have AS.
