Personally I think it's good to have a bit of everything. I like to bulk stuff out more lightheartedly so that when I do do something serious, it has more of an impact. I've had a lot of problems in the past with overt seriousness 
Anyway, it's up to you. I think you should have some serious bits, without sacrificing the essential goofiness of Krillin.
I certainly know that 17 won't be leaving anytime soon. I think you should avoid it if you can, character change generally doesn't work as well as intended. I actually hated the Buu character in the show, and my original choice was Cell Jr (believe it or not). Here, however I've fashioned the pink man into something that I do like. I really don't think there's anything you can do with Piccolo or 17 that you couldn't do with Krillin. Well, except regenerate =X but that's got nothing to do with personality.
