A good natural caster to learn is Annie probs. She's the backbone of LoL casters as she was the first real one to exist and still a pretty solid pick.

My first pick for caster would be Malzahar. He's just so good at everything. Ryze is still a solid pick, being tanky while still putting out a lot of damage. Swain and Vlad because both get survivability combined with good damage. Like Leo said, Annie is pretty solid, Tibbahs being a nice AoE stun and still having retardedly good burst. Kassadin for being impossible to focus. Karthus is still a good caster as well.

My order would be Malz > Swain/Vlad > Karthus > Kassadin > Ryze > Annie.

Since we're talking about who we'd pick for roles, I'll list out what I'd pick. Tanks would be Shen > Singed > Cho'Gath > Alistar > Amumu/Malphite. Casters would be Malzahar > Heimerdinger > Brand > Morde(tanky caster) > Karthus. I'd say my third niche role would be Support, which would be Soraka > Alistar > Taric > Morgana.

As far as tanks, I'm assuming practicing Rammus and Malphite would be beneficial.

Rammus isn't getting banned as much as he used to and Malphite is still good. Both good picks.
