Battle of the consoles
#21
They don't track sales figures. It's all just how many are shipped. Once it's at a store then it's considered "sold". But it would be nice if people could cite some sources, or specify domestic vs international.

Nintendo of course makes money on everything they sell, they have to, or they go out of business. Sony is one of the largest corporations on Earth. They can afford to lose a couple hundred dollars on every console. They make money on everything else though, controllers, games, Sony HDTVs.

What "they" are you talking about?

Places like EBX and Gamestop track their sales. o.0

Nintendo has loads of money that they haven't even resorted to. I mean, they make cheap consoles, and make an assload of money on them early. Plus all of the games they make for their systems sell out. Every Mario Party, every game with Mario in its name sells out. It kind of a low way to gain money.

I can easily defend Nintendo. They'll be around forever, as long as they don't fuck up like Sega did.

Everyone is calm. This is just how people talk about consoles.

That won't happen unless there are serious changes in their leadership. SEGA failed because of its poor infrastructure; they couldn't properly support their own consoles. Nintendo doesn't have that problem.

Sega's breakdown really depressed me. =( Don't bring that up.

So which company has the potential for going down that road this round?

None of them.

Xbox is Microsoft, and Bill is the richest man on the planet.

Sony has other revenues that they can tap into.

Nintendo is too intelligent to allow themselves to fuck up like Sega did.

Yeah, but Gamestop doesn't get together with WalMart and Circuit City and Best Buy and figure out how many consoles were sold all together. Nobody is tracking total sales, because it would be a total bitch and completely not worth it.

My friend bought a 360 when it came out and it had this roplem of overheating too quickly. ANd he wasn't the only one. So I gues you could say that early release was not that much of an advantage...?

360 has enough games to show off what it can do, and it's still failing... which is sad. Halo 3 will make or break the console I believe, but I'm sure it will do fine. I don't think it will win this war though, at least not from what it's been promising. But it's still early, so who knows.

The 360 is by far not failing. =/

I agree, but that wasn't my point.

However, you could pretty safely take a large company like Wal-Mart, look at their sales figures, and use that as a basis for extrapolation. Obviously there are serious flaws with that, but its a good way to get a feel for how people are doing domestically.

And that is something that people do. They just don't often make it clear that's what they're basing their intel off of.

The Wii-mote was causing carpal tunnel and flying away/breaking people's HDTVs.

Other than murder, the PS3 did fine.

Personally, I was disappointed with the Wii. The games it has are very often ports, shitty ports that try to turn what was done better on other consoles, even second gen ones, into a Wii friendly one.

Take Marvel Ultimate Alliance for example. I fucking loved the game on PS2, then I tried it on the Wii.

It was like getting hit in the face with a calcified baby.

Dude, all of their games don't sell out. I can go into any local electronics store and pick up a copy of pretty much any Wii game I want.

I'm not sure what you mean by "loads of money". But Nintendo would have to flop in both the handheld and the home console markets to be in trouble (read as: never going to happen). They're too well established to run into any real trouble. However, they don't have the nearly 70 billion dollars in assets that both Sony and Microsoft have.

How? They are deep enough into the 'good games' phase to be killing the market and they aren't. Not failing, I mean compared to the other two it's lagging behind. Considering what I said about what the PS3 still has coming up.
