New Addition: Power Points
#41
Belle Hibiki Wrote:And I think that most of us probably think of our custom techs in that way. They're not something we spam back to back to back, but signatures of our characters that are meant to be very powerful and dramatic.

Which raises the question of why you would create a tech without PP when the reason you took it was to, presumably, be awesome with it. (Unless your character is just a tech whore.)

That's really just a decision made by the player. Kaden, for example, pretty much just fights with his Custom Techs. That's why he has so many of them.

*cough* Kaden. *cough*

But this also raises another question; is there any way those of us who have those signature moves that Belle mentions could have XP refunded if we add PP into it? I'm interested in doing so for Shutdown.

Yeah, that's pretty much all we're talking about.

This isn't required for any Custom Techs.

I'm going to say no.

I'm not advising people to do anything. Do whatever you want and your move will be priced accordingly.

This is @ Juno's post before he edited.

We are trying to say that there is no need for everyone to rush and rethink all their moves to come up with some way to use PP. Those are meant to be those desperation moves and stuff like that.

If Kaden had to use PP for every step of his "setup" moves that he has built for his character's fighting style, he'd be a sad panda.

If you really want advice, I'd say to not worry about it. If you absolutely must (which shouldn't be the case, unless you are misunderstanding the intent), then just create an upgraded version of said custom tech. However, if you then find yourself PP starved, don't blame the system for it, because that's on you for setting yourself up to be overly reliant on it.

We have ti stop using "PP" to describe Power Points, I can't take it anymore. -_-

Kaden Wrote:There's an HQ upgrade that restores PP anytime that a character could get to it, so that's an option. No, it's not particularly cheap, but it would be a one-time cost. If people are worried about having to buy PP-Restoring items, I'd be willing to think about a cheap non-combat alternative; Capsule Corp could have a recharging station of some kind that people could use for a minor fee to recharge PP but it wouldn't be available in the middle of a fight. Does that sound like something that should be thrown on the table?

As I said before, Saga runners will have free reign to restrict/enable the use of PP in their Sagas. All-in-all, though, I wouldn't be too concerned about it. I imagine that most people will be, at least, willing to refill PP at the start of each Saga.
Let's make a list of what's been written so far.

-Use of Power-techs outside of events won't consume PP.
-Various items recover PP.
-Use of Power-techs in afterlife is unlimited.
-Rules regarding Power use can be rewritten on a case-by-case basis for events.

By forcing characters to use recovery items to restore Power, the only thing it does is restrict characters who spent their Power in one saga from having it available in another until they use a recovery item. I get that it's videogamey, as has been mentioned, and that capsule stations would be Inn-equivalents but it's unnecessary. There's no substantial need from the way the RPG plays to demand that loss of Power have a money-centric recovery. We only need to track Power usage inside saga threads/forums, and lists of remaining Points per character could be made there, so staff wouldn't have to bother updating roster sheets every time somebody burns Power or use recovery items. Finishing a saga would effectively "recover" spent Points.

This wouldn't change the core rules at all. It would only render impotent the Regeneration Ability's Point recovery attribute, which in turn affects Power in the least productive way - which is to passively wait for real world time to pass and then pestering staff for an update. Not the biggest of losses.

Quote:The sentence about being able to use Techniques/Abilities to affect PP was thrown in to give people the idea that Customs could be made using those. These are some of the things that were thrown around in the staff-forum discussion: Healing could be used to transfer PP from the healer to the healee. Ki Absorb could take a PP from an opponent. Venomous Ki could sap PP from an opponent. Customs involving PP will be under tighter scrutiny than most to prevent something that makes PP irrelevant.

What kind of specifics were you looking for about Customs that use PP, Rod? (Amusingly, Chou Kamehameha was the exact example I used when proposing the idea.) The basic idea is that Customs that use PP get a huge boost to their efficacy. If I'm in a Power-Up, and you're not, and you use a move that costs PP, it would still do serious damage. This offers people an alternative to being "forced" to take a Power-Up to compete with those who already have them as well as a way to side-step problems like pebble logic. (If you don't know what Pebble Logic is, don't worry about it.
Sticking to the given example, how many Points would a Chou Kamehameha use? If a character has Kamehameha (15xp) how much XP would it take to learn Chou Kamehameha? Does having the basic tech even affect the XP cost of an associated Power tech, or are they considered two completely unrelated items?

Quote:Was there anything I missed?
Have you updated the circles of hell with Power tech restrictions/enhancements, or does the term "power ups" also include the other Power techs?

Also, using "P Wings" for a tech name is mine so you bitches had better not touch it or I will fuckin cut u.

Power Points are not used in Other World. Anything that relies on Power Points can be used freely without paying the cost so long as you are dead. It should say so in the Rules forum.

The reason there wasn't already an "inn" option is because Player-versus-Player conflicts happen outside of sagas as well as within them. Conflicts involving the Dragonballs are a prime example. The idea is to make people choose when to use their PP and when to save them. If I have a DB and I step out of a saga with no PP, someone could just jump me and take it while I don't have the PP to defend myself.

It's more than just a saga mechanic.

Have the Kamehameha would have no relevance in learning the Chou Kamehameha. How many points a Custom uses is something the player decides, not the staff (there might be an exception to that, but I can't think of one; just sayin'). If you want a super-strong ki-beam move, then you can make one with no PP cost and it'll take a good chunk of XP to purchase. If you make one that includes a PP cost, the XP cost will reflect that, given the limited number of uses a character will have.

I'm sure you'd like me to use specific numbers, but there aren't really any to be used. It could stand to reason that using 1 PP to perform an attack would mean the attack is half as strong as Power-Up that costs 2 PP, but that's not always applicable. Someone could make a forcefield Custom that makes them immune to any damage for, say, 10 seconds and have it cost 1 PP to use. Or they could make a Possession Custom Tech that allows them to Possess people stronger than them for a longer period of time.

I will say this, though. If Person A has a 15 XP ki-beam with no PP cost, and Person B has a 15 XP ki-beam with 1 PP cost, Person B's attack will be substantially stronger every time.

I'm not sure what you're asking. Hell is part of the Afterlife.

EDIT: Heh... I didn't use "PP" to be annoying or anything. That's what it's referred to as and I'm going to be consistent about that.

Couple irks of mine.

Can PP go over our max if we drain from an opponent?

8/5 because we used Ki Absorption or w/e.

How are we going to use PP in a post without making an OOC note?

Is there a button I'm missing? This seems like a lot of update threads when everyone starts using PP. Power ups will take a while, but if we can use PP for custom-techs I see a lot of potential traffic in the Updates forum. Being me I'm curious to your thought process as staff. Not meant to...insult you.

I apologize if this is blunt. Currently fighting a fever...Not exactly feeling myself and not willing to; you get my point. ^^

If we're going to stick with it, PP needs a visual representation under our avatars, imo.

Maybe like that old stupid ranking system we had before the reset. Only going down instead of filling up.

I made a system pretty much exactly like this on DBA, but the site died before anyone really started to get their powerups, so I'm glad I'll finally be able to see something similar in practice.

I've only got a few of issues/comments. Firstly, I don't like Regen giving 1 PP per week; I always envisioned it as an active rather than passive ability. The Namekians/Buu/Cell didn't heal over time, they did it in one burst by expending a bunch of energy. Regen's powerful enough as is (though, as you probably know, I preferred it when it was the only way to regrow lost limbs, and healing's advantage was that it was usable on yourself and others).

Secondly, I'm iffy about techs which drain/destroy the enemy's PP. I'd say lowering your enemy's PP should cost you a PP, too. That, or get rid of it altogether.

Thirdly, a suggestion; I think you could go without having powerup masteries represented as an extra tech. I love the idea, but there's an even simpler (and IMO, better) way of doing it; simply represent powerup mastery by raising maximum PP. When Goku's PP is 10 as opposed to 5, he can use SSJ twice as often, so it's essentially the same thing. Not a big deal whichever way you do it, but I like the simplicity and fluidity of just raising PP.

I had another suggestion but it got pissed off and walked out of my mind since I took too long writing the above. Maybe it'll come back if I give it time.
