I always thought NE mages would make perfect sense. If blood elves can turn to the Light, why the hell can't night elves turn to magic? They used to use it once anyway.

I don't really care too much. I mean, I do love flavor and I want it to be as flavorful as possible, but if you have to sacrifice making lore/flavor sense in a game for the sake of balance, I'm all for that. Some games make their decisions based on "well, that doesn't make sense flavorwise" and balance gets thrown out. An example is a DBZ Rpg insisting on making Saiyans the strongest because "in the canon Saiyans were always stronger than most everyone by the end" and thus Super Saiyan being the only viable powerup.

That's a little different from WoW, though. Mages of differing races are (arguably) equal. There was nothing really wrong with the number of races that had Mages as an option (Human, Draenei, Gnome), and with Dwarf and Worgen picking up the staff, was giving Night Elves access to the class really necessary given the fact that lore shows them to be spectacularly bad at it?

Then again, the Warcraft universe has always revolved around the idea that history repeats itself. Perhaps this is just that message pounded home again.

For other people, maybe that's cool. But for me, it's a message that's wearing thin. Everyone just seems to be circling the drain - nothing ever goes anywhere. Which I guess is great for $$$, but...

Yeah, Kind of lost my thread there. /endpost

Because the last time they got deeply involved with Magic, the Sundering happened. The second time they get involved, the Catacylsm happens.

The Blood Elves bathed in Arcane magic, and the Sunwell got blown up.

They don't have a good track record with mages.

If I tell you I'm good, you would probably think I'm boasting, If I tell you I'm no good, You know I'm lying.

Hardly the point what the outcome is. The point is that NE's were mages and there's no reason to believe that some wayward ones wouldn't want to dabble in it again. Sorta like how any race uses warlock powers when they were strictly forbidden once upon a time.

I probably would have bitched about this stuff before, but by this point I'm pretty much unphased. Compared to the past lorelols this stuff is nothing. From the initial awkward clumping of the races into two factions (lorewise, it would have made much more sense for night elves to join the shamanic tree-hugging horde than the industrial alliance, but they turned horde into the 'evil' side so they got undead instead) to the retconning of a bunch of shit in BC, WoW's just been one giant turd on the universe's lore. Good plots and good MMOs go together like shit and strawberry shortcake.
