Finished both Animal Farm and Nineteen Eighty-Four by George Orwell, really well written novels. I take it that he was a rather sad person.

I'm off to look for Brave New World by Aldous Huxley, since I remember reading parts of it in high school and I liked what I read. Btw, does anyone know any good fantasy authors? I read the Broken Well Trilogy by Sam Bowring, that was a fantastic series.

Look into Pratchett if you enjoy fantasy + humor.

Brave New World is a good read; good to contrast with 1984.

I just started Game of Thrones by George R. R. Martin. JUST started. Not sure yet if I'll finish it. I love Dragon Age (the game), but the fantasy genre in literature tends to disappoint me.

I've noticed that fantasy authors seem to get a lot of leeway for their writing style for the sake of plot. I haven't noticed much linguistic innovation in the genre.

All of that said, Neil Gaiman is absolutely on my to-read list.

I'm a big ASoIF fan. I'd keep going with Martin, its not super pretty in terms of prose but the plotting is great. I feel, anyways.

I always got the feeling it was more of an angry awareness than a sadness with Orwell, especially in regards to those two novels.
