Aw. Toonami was what got me into DBZ. I still remember the first time I saw it, some 24-hour marathon. At 10 years old I was blown over by how awesome it was.

Toriyama had so much wang in his manga it's not even funny.

Hmph, I guess I don't care about Toomani because it has no meaning for me. I got into anime from sunday morning FOX shows on air TV in the early 90's, not cable. They only played the first season, and often went back to the beginning after airing a single new episode. It took about a year just to watch the Saiyan saga, and by then I had the whole god damn thing memorized word for word.

You kids now with your anime-rich cable networks... back in my day we had to watch our Japtoons barefoot going up hill both ways. >:/

It's not debated at all, chikushyo is usually just damn, or damn it and that's properly translated in the dvd's. In truth anime characters don't say "Fuck" that often, and when they do it's in english not in japanese they litterally say fyaaku yuu and give the finger it's a fansub myth that started that up.

Though admittedly there are some japanese words that actually mean "fuck", and "fuck you" but you won't see them in anime that often unless it's a more mature series which DBZ isn't.

I have been watching the uncut stuff though and the script is pretty good from what I can see, but really most anime even in the japanese version aren't going to go farther then; 'crap, damn, shit, ass'.

And this is the full uncut goods, they are releasing all the episodes not just the 275 they did before, all of them. Sadly they even show wang, seriously, Toriyama had so much wang in his manga it's not even funny.

Um, I'm not referring to something I heard on the internet from a fansub, I'm referring to what the Miyabi manager that we trained and sent to the Fayetteville, NC location "taught" a few of us. I'm not saying its a literal translation of "fuck" in the exact sense so much as word of intent, showing its "level of profanity" when compared to things like kuso and other phrases.

EDIT: However, you completely glossed over the point of my thread in that nearly every single time (which this has changed recently with dubs) that a dub translates a phrase, they have nearly always settled on the translation that is the most free from profanity. This is something I was REALLY glad didn't happen in Black Lagoon; in fact, it made me enjoy the dub better in that it flowed well (even if not a word for word translation like anime purists want where "everything is better in japanese and english always screws it up"). The bar scene with the drinking being a prime example to me.

Psh, I prefer the original score and dialog with subtitles over any English dubs and tracks. (excluding exceptional performances from shows like Cowboy Bebop, which also kept the original score)

I've talked to translaters and native speakers, and in fact I even questioned the same thing you have when watching official subs and fansubs and the answer has always been that the fansubs are embellishing what it really meant and makes them seem more profane.

It's not less profane, you just feel that it is because those words have lost weight in western society. Now a days crap and damn have considerably less weight then they did when they were originally being said and a lot of the time aren't even considered profane any longer.

Suprisingly the word "Baka" carries quite a bit of weight, more so than calling some one and idiot here but most people use it joking in the western world. I remember quite a few people being kicked out of our Japanese language class by the teacher who was nonplussed at the usage of that word.

Some thing also don't translate well considering japanese has like 5 different ways to say "YOU!" each with their own origin like "Kisama, Anata, Onore, Omae."

Kuso does mean shit, but it's fine to go with damn since it's also used and accepted for that.

As for the recent funimation dvds, they do pretty good with their translations. Though it's funny since it seems to be pretty litteraly with the translation, even has Goku using a japanese proverb in which he comments on his last attack "really being the weasels last fart."

Ah, man, I know I haven't watched the Toonami block in years, but...I'm really sad to see it go. It was a large part of my childhood, and it was the thing that really got me into anime in general. It was one of those things I looked forward to the most on a crappy afternoon after coming home from school. It'll be missed.
