I used to play Mortal Kombat, the original one. I was so psyched when it came out for SNES.

Doesn't beat Rad Racer, though.

Recoome... does it matter that they like something you don't? I despise Mortal Kombat now... but it doesn't bother me that you like it.

A lot of liking the older games/Mario games comes from nostalgia, man. We grew up with those games, so that's part of why they're so cool.

Personally, I'm not into Mario/Megaman, never have been. Although SMW was cool, and I really liked Mario RPG. That's about it...
Point is, if someone likes a game, who cares?

If you're talking about best games (assuming it's being limited to just consoles) than you had better mention the follow:

Super Mario Brothers
Metroid
Castlevania (usually just SOTN, but they all deserve some kind of mention)
Tony Hawk Pro Skater (it single-handedly created that genre)
Street Fighter (or, really, any Capcom fighting series)
Final Fantasy
Zelda

Everything else is just a spin off of those in some fashion or another.

EDIT: Oh, and Soul Caliber is a WAAAAAAAY better game than Tekken. Its more than simply knowing which combos instantly kill your opponent because they don't have a chance to hit the ground. As far as fighting games go, Tekken is just a glorified button-masher.

I'm not entirely sure where the confusion came from either, Bra. It should be bloody obvious to anyone who played Soul Blade, Soul Edge, Soul Caliber, or Soul Caliber 2 that it is on a completely different level, high above Tekken.

Yeah, I would probably replace the FF series with CT on my list, now that I think about it. Bomberman is another great one, but doesn't really have a genre to stick out in. Its just kind of in its own little group.

I think Megaman would go in place of Castlevania, now that I think about it. The best game of the Castlevania series (SOTN) is really in the "Metroid" category. So yeah, to restate:

Those are the games that I think epitomize their genre. They're not my favorites, that would be a somewhat different list, but I think those are fairly universal as far as best goes.

Errr... you know that Soul Blade and Soul Caliber are both part of the same series, right? The Soul Edge series is just flat out amazing.

You're right that that list is very similar to my favorites, I almost pointed that out. I think the fact that you admitted that they revolutionized their genres helps to prove my point.

EDIT: I haven't played any of the Zelda games past Majora's Mask. I know a lot of people didn't like that one, but I thought it was fun. Anyway, I can't really say anything about Windwaker other than they did an amazing job with the cell shading.
